John Greenwood

1727 Boston – 1792 Margate

The American-born John Greenwood settled in Amsterdam in 1761. He studied under the engraver Michiel Elgersma who trained him in the technique of mezzotint engraving.  Stylistically Greenwood's mezzotints reflect the tradition of such Dutch masters of the late seventeenth century as Pieter Schenck and Nicolaas Verkolje. Greenwood was active in London from 1763. Between 1764 and 1776 he exhibited paintings, watercolors, and prints at the Society of Artists.
