Bartholomäus Kilian

1630-1696, Augsburg

After finishing his apprenticeship Bartholomäus Kilian, a draughtsman and engraver from Augsburg, worked for three years with Matthäus Merian in Frankfurt and then with François de Poilly in Paris, where he was introduced to the portrait engraving technique employed in France. Back in Augsburg, Kilian became one of the most skilful and prolific portrait engravers of his time.
