The engraver and publisher, Jacob Matham, was the stepson and pupil of the painter and draughtsman Hendrik Goltzius. He was active as an engraver for Goltzius since about 1587 and in his early years worked exclusively after drawn originals by his teacher. From 1593-97 he lived in Italy. Around 1600 Matham took over the Goltzius shop in Haarlem and in 1601 received his own privilege from Prague.
