Jean-Bernard Restout was the son of the respected historical and portrait painter, Jean Restout the Younger (1692–1768). He was also related to the equally famous artists, Jean Jouvenet and Noel Hallé. Jean-Bernard distinguished himself as a painter and engraver, winning the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1758. He became a member of the Académie royale in 1769 and was a professor there from 1771. Restout’s printed work comprises a mere five etchings, all of which are of great rarity.
