Albert Besnard

(1849–1934, Paris)

Le lever. Etching. 13 x 8.8 cm and 10.9 x 13.7 cm. Signed. 1913. Copier 158; Godefroy 170. Watermark: “Ingres”.

This print is the fourth in a series of prints entitled Les petites voluptés, produced by Besnard in 1913 to demonstrate the small sensual delights of daily life. In due course, however, Besnard renounced his original idea, the last two prints showing less ‘daily’ scenes of Leda and the swan. The plate of this print has not survived. A very rich, contrasting impression with small margins. Slightly foxed in the left margin, otherwise very well preserved.
