Anthonie Waterloo

(1610 Lille - 1690 Utrecht)

Large Waterfall. Etching. 11.6 x 16.7 cm. Hollstein 75.

Anthonie Waterloo once again demonstrates his outstanding artistic skill in this impressive etching of a Large Waterfall. The water cascades through a rocky landscape overgrown with intertwining shrubs and trees. The dense and very varied hatching, which often makes it almost impossible to distinguish the natural shapes of the rocks and trees, forms a graphic pattern of great visual impact. In this wild, elemental scenery, in which Waterloo has brilliantly captured the unbridled force of nature, only the barely visible footpath towards the right-hand margin points to an occasional human presence. The print belongs to a series of six landscapes with rock massifs and waterfalls (Hollstein 71-76) and has the artist’s initials inscribed in the top left-hand corner. A superb, strong impression with thread margins. Minimal traces of handling, otherwise in impeccable condition. From the collection of Earl Spencer, Althorp (Lugt 1530-1532, without stamp).
