This companion piece showing St. Jerome immersed in prayer is similarly steeped in religious pathos. The artist’s sensitive use of the needle produces striking contrasts between light and dark and bathes the scene in an unsteady, flickering light. The surfaces of the bare rocks and the terrain are treated in a lively and varied manner. The etching is not recorded in the descriptive literature and only a handful of impressions have survived (The Art Institute, Chicago, Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam – proof in red ink, inv.
