Charles-André Malardot

(1817 Metz – 1879 Paris)

Paysage avec trois flamants au bord d’une mare. Etching. 45.8 x 37.1 cm. 1843. Bellevoye 7, Inventaire du Fonds Français 4.

Malardot’s closeness to nature and his keen eye for original details are once again very prominent in this absolutely delightful depiction of an open woodland and meadow landscape surrounding bodies of water. Three flamingos have settled on the bank of a pond sheltered by towering trees. One of the long-necked birds is busy preening itself, while the others stand watchfully nearby. Nevertheless, they have not spied the hunter with a rifle hiding behind a ledge in the left foreground. The lush, bizarre shapes of the vegetation in Malardot’s landscape have regularly resulted in his works being compared with those of Rodolphe Bresdin, a contemporary etcher and lithographer. A fine, even impression with wide margins. In excellent condition.
