Christian Ernst Bernhard Morgenstern

(1805 Hamburg – 1867 Munich)

Two Tyroleans in a Ravine. Etching on Chine appliqué. 14.6 x 17.9 cm. 1843. Andresen 2.

Christian Morgenstern’s printed oeuvre encompasses just ten etchings which are distinguished by the intimacy of the artist’s approach and his sensitive observation of nature. The scene shows a part of the Zemmgrund near Mayrhofen in the Zillerthal in Tyrol. The two wanderers, one of whom carries a pannier on his back, appear insignificant in the midst of the picturesque overgrown ravine. The dense, narrow hatching produces a dramatic chiaroscuro effect. A solitary shaft of sunlight penetrates the scene and lights up a rock mass behind the two men. In the right foreground a mountain stream pursues its course and forms a little waterfall. The top right-hand corner remained blank during the etching process. In later impressions a drypoint was used to fill it in. A very fine, nuanced impression with margins. In excellent condition.
