Christoph Nathe

(1753 Nieder-Bielau – 1806 Schadewalde)

The Castle. Etching on firm wove paper. 17.6 x 21.4 cm. Circa 1800. Rümann 70, Fröhlich G70 II.

This etching, an example of Nathe’s late work, shows the artist at the pinnacle of his career. The refined, subtly nuanced etching technique and the suggestive way in which the light and atmosphere have been captured give the landscape both intimacy and grandeur. A superb, rich impression of the second state with fine cross-hatching in the sky and dark shadows on the edges of the meadow. With margins respectively full margins around the inky platemark on two sides. Minor traces of handling in the margins, insignificant remains of old hinges on the verso, otherwise in pristine condition.
