Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki

(1726 Danzig – 1801 Berlin)

Group of Dwarfs or Tender Love. Etching. 7.5 x 6.3 cm. 1790. Engelmann 647 I (of II).

The Group of Dwarfs, also known as Tender Love, is another typical example of Chodowiecki’s humorous powers of observation and his keen eye for telling characterisation. A stocky officer in full regalia with all the insignia of his profession embraces a miniature-sized, puppet-like woman who is dressed very much in the fashion of the time. The whole is executed in a delicate, intricate etching technique, which produces a subtle chiaroscuro effect. This is an early impression, before the officer’s moustache and before the beauty plaster on the woman’s right cheek – additions made later in a different hand. A very fine, crisp and contrasting impression with margins. In impeccable condition.
