Giovanni Battista Tiepolo

(1696 Venice – 1770 Madrid)

Satyr Family with the Obelisk. Etching from the Scherzi di Fantasia. 22.5 x 17.7 cm. De Vesme 23; Rizzi (1970) 13 I (of II); Rizzi (1971) 14 I (of II); Succi 54 I (of II).

The Satyr Family is one of the most serene and charming compositions from the Scherzi. It lacks the dark, portentous atmosphere characteristic of some of the other works in the cycle. The content of the scene can also be readily interpreted. At its heart is the loving relationship between mother and child, the artist conveying an atmosphere of relaxed family togetherness. The clear, open linework indicates that the work arose at a relatively early period in the artist’s career. Succi dates the com - position to around 1743/44. A superb, clear early impression, with touches of burr along the platemark, with even margins. Before the number. Minor foxing, otherwise in perfect condition.
