Giovanni Battista Tiepolo

(1696 Venice – 1770 Madrid)

Seated Magician, Boy and Four Figures. Etching from the Scherzi di Fantasia. 22.2 x 17.7 cm. De Vesme 17; Rizzi (1970) 7 I (of II); Rizzi (1971) 8 I (of II); Succi 71 I (of II).

The preliminary drawing for this artistically very concentrated and convincing composition is in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Demonstrating consummate skill, Tiepolo has devised a highly evocative arrangement of people, animals, vegetation and architectural fragments which inevitably captivates the beholder while defying any precise interpretation. He thus gives perfect expression to the artistic principle of the capriccio. A magnificent early impression with narrow margins, before the number. In mint condition.
