Giovanni David

(1743 Cabella Ligure – 1790 Genoa)

Le Marchand allant à Rialto. Etching with aquatint on firm Venetian laid paper. 24 x 16.8 cm. 1775. Grassi 15a.

This charming print is also part of the series Divers / Portraits / gravés à l’eau-forte from 1775 that Giovanni David dedicated to his teacher, Domenico Corvi. The silhouette of a tall Venetian merchant clad in a voluminous cloak dominates the composition and affords him a striking presence. Visible in the background are the Ponte di Rialto and the facades of several palazzi along the Canal Grande. With great economy of means David has created an image full of atmosphere and visual appeal. A very fine, delicate and nuanced impression with full margins. In mint condition.
