Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo

(1727 - 1804, Venice)

A Turk Seen from Behind. Etching. 12.3 x 9.1 cm. Circa 1772-73. De Vesme 160; Rizzi (1970) 200 I (of II); Rizzi (1971) 204 I (of II); Succi 139 I (of II). Watermark: Tre Lune (fragment).

Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo etched the series Raccolta di teste after original paintings and drawings by his father, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, in two stages. The first series of 27 etchings was finished by 1757, while the second series of 33 portraits of philosophers was executed by Domenico after his father's death in 1770. The 60 etchings were published in two albums, each of which contained 30 plates and a title page.
A very fine, nuanced and tonal impression with full margins, before the number 13. Minor fissures in the right margin, traces of previous mounting along the upper edge on the reverse, minor discoloration, otherwise in good condition. From the collection of Franz Goldstein, Vienna (Lugt 1105b).
