Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo

(1727–1804, Venice)

Ruggero Frees Angelica. Etching. 24.6 x 20.5 cm. 1757. Succi 86 II.

This etching reproduces a fresco by the artist’s father, Giovanni Battista, in the Stanza dell’Orlando Furioso at the Villa Valmarana in Monte Berico near Vicenza, where the paintings were completed in the summer of 1757 at the latest. Giovanni Domenico produced the present etching the same year after this magnificent cycle, which was a defining milestone on his father’s path to his mature style. The sheet has been executed in a light, agile and vibrating etching technique which convincingly reproduces the atmospheric, tonal values of the original. The pathos and Baroque theatricality of the depiction make it comparable to a scene from a contemporary opera seria. A magnificent, nuanced impression with even margins. Printed on characteristic, medium-weight, Venetian laid paper. Minor staining and ageing, otherwise in excellent condition.
