Giovanni Francesco Grimaldi

(1606 Bologna – 1680 Rome)

Landscape with Two Men on Top of a Mountain. Etching. 17.6 x 27.7 cm. B. 31.

The rugged, wind-blown mountain landscape radiates a special charm attributable primarily to the free, almost sketch-like drawing style and the intriguing manner in which the light and atmosphere have been captured. The landscape appears almost deserted. The only human figures – two men resting on a mountain top and two rowers in a barge – appear insignificant in this wild, unspoiled natural environment. For all his artistic spontaneity Grimaldi shows himself to be very much in the artistic tradition of his native city of Bologna. The carefully composed pastoral scene is fully in keeping with the approach to landscape of his great predecessor, Annibale Carracci. A superb, tonal impression with thread margins. Minor ageing, otherwise in excellent condition.
