Jacob Lois

(1620–1676, Rotterdam)

Ecce Homo. Etching. 9.7 x 6.8 cm. 1643. Hollstein 5.

The painter, architect and etcher Jacob Lois was active as an artist in Rotterdam since 1643. Lois also held several civil functions in his native town such as captain of the Rotterdam militia and lay assessor of the local court of justice. The printed œuvre of the artist is very rare and comprises only five etchings with mainly mythological themes. The present Ecce Homo executed in 1643 is the only religious subject. The small, delicate etching is executed in a detailed, refined etching technique and strikes by its sophisticated, soft lighting. A very fine, harmonious impression trimmed to the borderline. Minor defects, otherwise in excellent condition. Duplicate of the Kunsthalle, Hamburg (Lugt 1328)
