Jacob Matham

(1571–1631, Haarlem)

The Rest on the Flight into Egypt. Engraving after Bartholomäus Spranger. 41.3 x 29.6 cm. 1610. Bartsch 3; Widerkehr (New Hollstein) 24.

This impressive, masterfully composed engraving after a design by Bartholomeus Spranger was created in 1610, one year prior to his death. Spranger, who had been active at the Rudolfine Court in Prague since 1580, was elevated to noble status in 1595 as a tribute to his artistic prestige. In 1602, as a prosperous man and celebrated artist, Spranger visited the Netherlands, and, despite the geographical distance, a fruitful and symbiotic relationship developed over the years, particularly with Hendrick Goltzius and his workshop in Haarlem. Evidence of this collaboration is reflected in the numerous engravings based on Spranger’s inventions, produced by Goltzius and his associates.

A characteristic example of this group of works is the present, quite rare engraving The Rest on the Flight into Egypt, which was created by Goltzius’ pupil and adopted son Jacob Matham. The sheet stands out for the remarkable physical presence of the Virgin and Child and the Infant St John, whose figures dominate the right side of the composition, while the silhouette of Saint Joseph is discernible only as a subtle background detail. The vigorous engraving technique with its swelling parallel and cross hatchings, exemplifies the distinctive method of the Goltzius school. A superb, distinct impression with even margins. Minor ageing, otherwise in impeccable condition.
