Jacob van der Ulft

(1627 Gorkum – 1689 Noordwijk)

A Southern Port Scene. Pen and point of brush in brown ink, brown wash. 27.8 x 22.8 cm.

This is a typical work by Jacob van der Ulft, a self-taught artist who was mayor of his native Gorkum from 1660 to 1679. His drawn oeuvre encompasses numerous sheets on Italian subjects. As Arnold Houbraken notes, van der Ulft was probably never in Italy, drawing his inspiration instead from works by Dutch Italianates. In particular, van der Ulft worked after designs by Jan de Bisschop, to whose oeuvre his inventions are closely related in stylistic and thematic respects, which in the past frequently led to them being confused. Van der Ulft very often made pen and point of brush drawings in brown ink that are distinguished by their flowing, accurate washes and striking chiaroscuro effect. This is true of the present delightful and visually striking depiction of an Italian port which radiates great spontaneity and derives its charm from the consummate rendering of the warm sunlight. Provenance: collection of J. Goll van Franckenstein (Lugt 2987).
