An Ancient Bacchanal. Pen and ink over a light preliminary drawing in pencil, watercolour and gouache. 21.7 x 36 cm.
This charming and lively depiction of an ancient bacchanal is a characteristic piece by Jacques-Philippe Caresme, who trained as a painter under Charles-Antonie Coypel in Paris. Caresme was admitted to the Academy in 1766 and regularly exhibited his works at the Salon until 1777. From 1768 onwards the artist was in service to royalty. Commissioned works he produced are to be found in the Petit Trianon in Versailles and the Château de Vincennes.
The present work is distinguished by its fluent and elegant draughtsmanship. The exuberant, sensual activities of the satyrs and nymphs are rendered with verve and a marked sense of narrative detail. The finely gradated, subdued colouring is fully in keeping with the prevailing aesthetic sentiment under Louis XV.
