Jan Gerritsz. van Bronckhorst

(circa 1603 Utrecht – 1661 Amsterdam)

The Virgin with Child. Etching in an oval frame after Cornelis van Poelenburgh. 16.6 x 12.7 cm. Hollstein 3.

This charming portrait of the Virgin with Child arose in 1636 after a painting by Cornelis van Poelenburgh, with whom the artist enjoyed a close relationship in Utrecht. It was van Poelenburgh who encouraged Bronckhorst to take up etching. An outstanding feature of the works he produced is their extremely refined linework. The artist uses a particularly sharp needle and dense hatching to create a very soft chiaroscuro with delicate tonal gradations.

This intimate depiction is remarkable for its intense physical presence and subtle psychological characterisation. The enchanting, alert infant Jesus looks at the observer with a curious gaze. The delightful etching is of exquisite rarity. A fine, wonderfully velvety impression with delicate plate tone and wide margins. Minor ageing, otherwise in excellent condition.
