Jean-Michel Grobon

(1770–1853, Lyon)

A River Landscape near Lyon. Brush drawing in grey ink. 14.7 x 20.8 cm. Signed and dated in pen and brown ink: “Grobon 1810”.

Grobon’s simple and direct view of nature exudes a special charm, especially in his landscapes. This central feature of his art is readily apparent in our little study sheet, a brush drawing distinguished by its restrained atmosphere and soft sfumato. The finely nuanced distribution of light is a clear reference to the influence of the artist’s teacher, Jean-Jacques de Boissieu. However, Grobon’s drawing style is freer and more schematic than that of his mentor. He succeeds in creating a great sense of depth and veracity in a very small format.
