Half-length Portrait of an Old Man, Turned Slightly to the Right. Etching. 1750. 12.7 x 12.4 cm. Schultz 2012, 13.
Joachim Martin Falbe portrayed this pensive old man on two occasions from different angles (cf. Schultz 2012, 14). Here his drawing of the old man’s face lined with age radiates simplicity but also a certain sensitivity. The contrasting distribution of light and the animated use of the etching needle give the work a marked vitality. The line of vision of the man’s humbly bowed head is emphasised by the signature “Falbe f. 1750” which is placed on the same diagonal. The etching is very rare. Schultz merely reproduces the anonymous copy in reverse. A very fine, nuanced impression with thread margins.
