Johann Christoph Erhard

(1795 Nuremberg - 1822 Rome)

The Artist Resting with his Guide. Etching. 19.9 x 26.8 cm. 1819. Apell 91 IV.

This fine atmospheric picture takes up a motif from the artist’s journey to Salzburg in 1818. The artist has taken off his coat and is resting under an old lime tree. His cap and portfolio are lying on the grass to his left and his walking stick on the path. Sat to the right of him next to his luggage is the guide, who is listening attentively to what the artist has to say. The details of the vegetation and the landscape have been rendered in a subtle, very refined etching technique. The weathered trunk of the very old lime tree is reproduced so convincingly that it appears almost tangible. A fine, nuanced impression with even margins. Minor ageing, occasional traces of previous mounting on the verso, otherwise in very good condition.
