Johann Georg von Dillis

(1759 Grüngiebing – 1841 Munich)

The Rotting Tree-trunk. Etching on wove paper. 17 x 24.2 cm. 1793. Andresen 31.

“Freely and painterly treated sheets in Ruysdael’s taste and etched directly onto the copper from nature at the site.” Thus Andresen’s description of the present print and its pendant The Old Willow by the Stream, both clearly based on motifs taken from the English Garden in Munich. The vigorous linework of these two sketches done directly from nature reveal a startling freshness and spontaneity. In comparison to the companion piece this composition is more open and transparent. Instead of an impenetrable tangle of shrubbery and undergrowth, nature is shown from its picturesque side. However, the influence of the 17th century Dutch landscape etchings, especially those of Jacob van Ruisdael, is unmistakable.

A superb, rich impression with full margins. In perfect condition. From the Stechow Collection (Lugt 2371).
