The vigorous linework of these two sketches done directly from nature reveal a startling freshness and spontaneity. In comparison to the companion piece this composition is more open and transparent. Instead of an impenetrable tangle of shrubbery and undergrowth, nature is shown from its picturesque side. However, the influence of the 17th century Dutch landscape etchings, especially those of Jacob van Ruisdael, is unmistakable.
