Johann Gottlieb Glume

(1711–1778, Berlin)

Young Woman With a Parasol. Etching. 12.8 x 10.9 cm. 1749. Soldan 8.

The painter, draughtsman and etcher, Johann Gottlieb Glume, son of the Berlin sculptor Johann Georg Glume and brother of Christian Friedrich Glume, likewise a sculptor, was trained in Berlin by Johann Harper and the Prussian court painter, Antoine Pesne, and was regarded as the latter’s best pupil. His small-format, intimate etchings convey a vivid picture of middle-class life in 18th century Berlin during the reign of Frederick the Great. There really is no better description of Glume than that provided by Wilhelm Soldan: „ Glume is straightforward without being simple; he is consistenly genuine and free of any poses or false pretentions“. A very fine, crisp impression with small margins. In perfect condition. Rare.
