Cornelis van Kittensteyn

(circa 1600 Delft – after 1638 Haarlem)

Auditum (Hearing). Engraving and etching. 22.5 x 25 cm. Circa 1625–30. Hollstein 8. Watermark: Small jug.

In 1623 the draughtsman and engraver, Cornelis van Kittensteyn, moved to Haarlem and spent the rest of his life there. A relative of the engraver, Willem Outgersz. Akersloot, he was admitted to the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke in 1630. Kittensteyn, who was probably trained by Jacob Matham, is known primarily as a reproductive engraver. He worked mostly after designs by well-known Haarlem genre painters such as Willem Buytewech and Dirk Hals and also made a name for himself as an illustrator. A superb, contrasting and crisp impression with thread margins. Minor defects, otherwise in excellent condition. Rare.
