Lorenzo Loli

(1612–1691, Bologna)

St. Jerome. Etching. 17 x 14.2 cm. B. 13.

The painter and etcher, Lorenzo Loli, studied under Guido Reni and Andrea Sirani. Several altar pieces in his hand and paintings on religious themes have been preserved in his native city of Bologna. Loli, a typical representative of Emilian Baroque painting, ranks among the best Bolognese painter-etchers of the Seicento. This portrayal of St. Jerome immersed in contemplation goes back to a composition by Guido Reni. The work is rendered in a fluid, accurate style which produces soft, painterly transitions and a highly evocative chiaroscuro effect. A superb, contrasting and tonal impression with thread margins. In mint condition.
