Max Liebermann

(1847–1935, Berlin)

From the Jewish Quarter in Amsterdam, Jews Street, large. Drypoint on buff wove paper. 31.2 x 22.3 cm. Signed, numbered 16/30. (1908). Schiefler 72.

Liebermann convincingly renders the vivid street life in the old Jewish quarter of Amsterdam at the beginning of the 20th century. The artist particularly liked the colourful scenery and the frantic activity of merchants and passers-by and thus created artistically captivating images of this microcosm of Jewish life which was forever destroyed by the Shoah. An extremely fine impression, printed with considerable contrast and a vivid veil of tone. With full margins. Minor discoloration and ageing, otherwise in very good condition.
