Pierre Brebiette

(circa 1598 Mantes – 1642 Paris)

Galatea on a Chariot, Drawn by Dolphins and Accompanied by Venus, Tritons and Sea Nymphs. Etching. 14.2 x 22.3 cm. Le Blanc 101, Inventaire du Fonds Français 88.

Brebiette’s lively and imaginative etching style is particularly effective in this print after his own invention. The divine company is portrayed in a deft and animated etching style which makes the protagonists appear more down-to-earth than divine. Brebiette’s remarkable talent for satire and fanciful detail is apparent, for instance, in the two floating putti grappling with a fat fish and the unsuspecting little genius whose hand is about to be swallowed by a predatory fish. The whole is imbued with the originality of the artist’s invention and his distinctive stylistic idiom. A very fine, contrasting and crisp impression with thread margins around the inky platemark. In mint condition.
